Lohri marks the end of winter solstice and after lohri, the days start getting longer. It is also celebrated as the harvest festival as it marks the beginning of harvest season and the end of sowing season.

Lohri is also considered as the first biggest festival of the new year. People wear new clothes and decorate their homes on this festival.
In Punjab, people light bonfire and get together there to pay obeisance to bonfire. There is also a great significance of jaggery (gurh), gachak, peanuts, revadi and popcorn on Lohri. People share these sweet delicacies with each other and dance around the bonfire on the base of Dhol.

There is a famous folklore which is sung on the auspicious occassion of Lohri i.e. Sunder Mundriye… Ho. Tera Kon Vichara… Ho. Dulla Bhatti Wala… Ho and so on.

This festival is also very significant for the newly married couples and for the family of new born baby.
The family of new born baby holds a special party on this festival and specially invites to their friends and relatives. In return, they give gifts and sweets to the new born and congratulate the family for the new member.
