On January 19, 2025, a fire erupted at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, India, caused by a gas cylinder explosion. The blaze engulfed at least 18 temporary tents before firefighters contained it. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is considered the world’s largest religious gathering. The current festival, which began on January 13, 2025, is expected to attract over 400 million attendees over six weeks. Pilgrims gather at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers for ritual baths, believed to cleanse them of sins and liberate them from the cycle of rebirth.
To accommodate the massive influx of visitors, authorities have constructed a sprawling tent city equipped with thousands of kitchens, toilets, roads, communication towers, and hospitals. Approximately 50,000 security personnel are deployed to maintain order and manage the crowds.
