Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated every year which marks the birth anniversary of the Maharishi Valmiki. He was the one who wrote an epic Ramayana which includes 24000 verses (Shlokas) and 7 cantos (Kandas). According to the Hindu lunar calendar, he was born on Purnima in the month of Ashvin.
He is revered as Adi Kavi, the first poet of Sanskrit literature and also the writer of epic Ramayana. This day is also known as Pragat Diwas.

Valmiki Jayanti generally falls in the month of October or November. This year it will be celebrated on October 17, 2024 (Thursday).
Purnima tithi begins:- 08:40 PM on October 16, 2024

Valmiki Jayanti 2024:- Significance
Maharishi Valmiki was born as Agni Sharma in the Brahmin family. Once he met to great sage Narada and had a discourse about his duties. After discourse with Narada, Agni Sharma started his penance and chanted the word “Mara” which means “die.” As his penance lasted many years, the word “Mara” became “Rama”, the name of Lord Vishnu.
During his penance, an ant-hills formed around him but he had so engrossed in the penance that it couldn’t disturb him which earned him the name ‘Valmiki.’

Maharishi Valmiki had made his ashram at the bank of ganga. He had also played an important role in the Ramayana. Shri Ram met him during the exile and Sita stayed at Valmiki’s Ashram where she gave birth to twins Lava and Kusha. Valmiki taught Ramayana to the twins there.
Valmiki Jayanti 2024:- Celebrations
Valmiki community celebrate this day with full of enthusiasm and fervour. They take part in the processions called Shobha Yatra. The temples of Maharishi Valmiki are also decorated with flowers and lights. They offer free food to public and recite prayers.
