A Triumph for Dharambir

Dharambir’s gold victory is a significant milestone, as it represents India’s first-ever gold in the Men’s Club Throw F51 event at the Paris Paralympics. The 35-year-old athlete from Sonipat claimed the top spot with a throw of 34.92 metres on his fifth attempt, marking a 1-2 finish for India in the event.

Before this victory, Dharambir had already made a name for himself by winning silver at the Asian Para Games in 2022. His extraordinary achievements have earned him the prestigious Bhim Award in 2022, Haryana’s highest sports honor.

Dharambir’s journey to success hasn’t been easy. After a diving accident left him paralysed, he fought through the challenges to make a name for himself in the sport. While his previous attempts at the Paralympics saw him finish ninth in Rio 2016 and eighth in Tokyo 2020, his perseverance paid off in Paris 2024.

Pranav Soorma’s Silver Streak

Pranav Soorma added to India’s medal count by winning silver with a throw of 34.59 metres on his first attempt. This marked his ninth silver medal in the Summer Games. Like Dharambir, Pranav also won gold at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou last year.

Hailing from Faridabad, the 29-year-old athlete faced a life-altering spinal cord injury 13 years ago when a cement sheet fell on him. Despite the injury that left him paralysed, Pranav has consistently showcased his talent on the international stage.

Understanding the F51 Event

The F51 category in para athletics is for athletes who have severe impairments in trunk, leg, and hand movements. Competitors participate in a seated position, using their shoulders and arms to generate power for the throw. Both Dharambir and Pranav excel in this challenging event, making India proud on the global stage.

With their incredible performances, Dharambir and Pranav have set new benchmarks for Indian para-athletics at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
