Charmila claimed producer MP Mohanan, production manager Shanmukhan, and their friends tried to gangrape her. She also accused director Hariharan of asking her for “adjustment”.
On Saturday, actor Charmila made shocking revelations about her experiences of sexual harassment and attempted rape within the Malayalam film industry. She accused producer MP Mohanan and his associates of attempting to assault her in a hotel room, and also alleged inappropriate advances from director Hariharan.

Charmila recounted a harrowing incident from 1997 during the filming of Arjunan Pillayum Anju Makkalum, where she claims producer MP Mohanan, production manager Shanmukhan, and their friends tried to gangrape her. “They attempted to remove my saree and also sexually harassed my assistant,” Charmila shared.
She managed to escape the situation with the help of an autorickshaw driver, but said that junior artists involved in the movie were not as fortunate and were raped. She also alleged that the hotel’s receptionist was complicit in the attack.
In addition to this, Charmila accused renowned director Hariharan, known for films like Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha and Sargam, of asking her for “adjustment” — a euphemism for sexual favors. “Hariharan asked my friend and fellow actor Vishnu if I was willing to make adjustments. When I refused, both of us were removed from the film Parinayam,” she revealed.
Charmila explained that her refusal to engage in “adjustments” led to her losing many film opportunities. “I’ve worked in four languages, but these issues are particularly prevalent in the Malayalam industry,” she added.

Despite these traumatic experiences, Charmila stated that she does not wish to file a formal complaint, citing her desire to focus on her responsibilities as a mother to her son.
