Bittihotra Mohanty was convicted of rape
Bittihotra, often referred to as Bitti, was a management student when he was convicted of raping a German woman in Rajasthan’s Alwar in March 2006. The fast-track court delivered a verdict in just 21 days, sentencing him to seven years in prison.
The chargesheet was filed three days after the incident, and the court issued its verdict on April 12, 2006. Bitti appealed the decision, but both the Rajasthan High Court and later the Supreme Court upheld the conviction.
Bittihotra Mohanty absconded during parole
After being convicted, Bitti was granted a 14-day parole in November 2006 to visit his ailing mother. The parole was secured with a Rs 50,000 surety deposited by his father. However, Bitti absconded during this period and evaded capture for nearly six years until his arrest in March 2013 in Kannur, Kerala. His arrest came after a bank, where he was employed as a probationary officer under the alias Raghav Ranjan, received an anonymous tip about his true identity.
Bittihotra Mohanty’s father was suspended
The incident had severe consequences for Bitti’s father, Bidya Bhusan Mohanty, a 1972-batch IPS officer. In August 2007, he was suspended by the Odisha government after a Rajasthan court issued a non-bailable warrant against him for allegedly assisting his son in jumping parole.
