Every year, World Population Day is celebrated on July 11 all over the world. The aim of this day is to highlight the adverse impact of overpopulation on the world. Growth and development of any country depend upon the population of that country.

This day helps in recognizing that the population management is very essential for the growth of any person and country. India has now become the largest populace country in the world.

World Population Day 2024:- History

The United Nations proclaimed this day in 1989. This day came into existence after the observation of Five billion Day on July 11, 1987. When the World had crossed the mark of five billion population, then this day was observed and people gave good response to this.

First time, World Population day was celebrated on July 11, 1989. Then, the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution in December, 1989 to celebrate this day every year to make people aware about the effect of overpopulation on the world’s climate and environment.

World Population Day 2024:- Significance

This day makes people aware about the adverse impact of overpopulation. Proper education must be given to people to control the population. Government of different countries also adopted various measures to control the population.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, it has come to know that which countries had more population, worst-hit by the pandemic. That countries also faced the problem of shortage of hospitals, beds, ventilators and oxygens. On the other hand, which countries had lesser population, handled the pandemic without much sufferings.

This day also discusses family planning, poverty, sexual equality, maternal health and civil rights. Whenever someone tells about overpopulation, these things also come into mind. In 2011, World population crossed the 7 billion mark and In 2023, it has hit the 8 billion mark.

The theme of World Population Day 2024 is “To Leave No One Behind, Count Everyone.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said, “As the theme of this year’s World Population Day reminds us, investing in data collection is important to understanding problems, tailoring solutions, and driving progress. So is finance. I urge countries to make the most of the Summit of the Future this year to unleash affordable capital for sustainable development.”
