“Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience” is the theme of this year’s World Environment Day. World Environment Day 2024 is hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day every year across the world. This day was come into existence in early 70s on the initiative of the United Nations. This year marks the 51st anniversary of the event, which has been led by UNEP since 1973. This day makes people aware about the importance of environment. The main reason behind celebrating this day is to protect environment from pollution, global warming and other threats.
Every year, the United Nations organise an event on this day. Governments, NGO’s and many other institutions collectively celebrate this day by spreading awareness among people about the environment.

“Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience” is the theme of this year’s world environment day. Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. World Environment Day 2024 is hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
World Environment Day 2024:- History
This day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 which was the first day of Stockholm conference on the human environment. However, it was celebrated for the first time in the United States in 1974 with the theme ‘Only One Earth’. Since 1974, it has been celebrated every year in the whole world.
World Environment Day 2024:- Significance
World Environment Day promotes the importance of environment in the human life. All living beings can survive on earth only in good environment. It provides us basic necessities i.e. Air, Water, Heat etc. Besides this, it also provides wood, rubber, medicines, food and many other things which require in day to day life.
But due to increase in population and increasing need of land and food, the environment is getting worse day by day. Number of factories and vehicles are increasing and it leads to increase in pollution whether it is an air, water, soil or noise pollution.
Only people around the globe can protect environment by taking collective actions. Each and every person need to plant more and more trees and use pollution free vehicles. Protection of environment is very necessary for the future generation.
