During India’s thrilling encounter against Bangladesh in the Super Eight stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup, former captain Virat Kohli stirred nostalgic memories among fans with his spirited attempt to retrieve the ball beyond the boundary.

This memorable moment occurred in the second innings, contributing to India’s eventual 50-run victory, which brought them closer to a second consecutive semifinal berth in T20 World Cups.

The incident unfolded in the 17th over of Bangladesh’s chase of 197 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, on Saturday. Facing an uphill task of 74 runs from just 18 balls with four wickets remaining, Bangladesh’s Rishad Hossain hit a delivery from Arshdeep Singh for a six. The ball soared over the deep mid-wicket boundary, past the LED advertisement hoardings, and slid under a platform.

Stationed near the boundary, Virat Kohli leapt over the hoardings and, spotting the ball under the platform, made an enthusiastic effort to retrieve it. His successful dive under the platform drew laughter and applause from the commentators.

In the match, Hardik Pandya’s performance was pivotal to India’s commanding 50-run win in Antigua. He scored an unbeaten 50 off 27 balls, featuring four boundaries and three sixes, helping India post a formidable 196 for five—their highest score in what has been a low-scoring tournament. Pandya also contributed with the ball, taking one wicket for 32 runs, while Kuldeep Yadav excelled with three wickets, restricting Bangladesh to 146 for eight.

This second consecutive defeat pushed Bangladesh to the bottom of Group 1 in the Super Eight, while India’s victory propelled them to the top of the table. India had previously secured a win against Afghanistan and maintained their lead after Afghanistan’s stunning victory over Australia in Kingston, marking one of the tournament’s biggest upsets and Afghanistan’s most significant international win.
