James Kent, the renowned chef known for his significant contributions to New York City’s culinary scene, has passed away, according to an announcement by his restaurants and hospitality group on Saturday.

“We are devastated to announce that Chef James Kent unexpectedly passed away earlier today,” Saga Hospitality Group shared in an Instagram post, revealing the death of the 45-year-old chef. Kent was the visionary behind some of New York’s most prestigious dining establishments, including Crown Shy, Overstory, and Saga.

The Instagram post emphasized the group’s commitment to supporting each other, and most importantly, Kent’s family—his wife Kelly and his children Gavin and Avery—during this difficult time. The message concluded with a poignant reminder for followers to cherish Father’s Day with their loved ones.

As of the time of publication, neither the hospitality group nor Kent’s family had disclosed the cause of his death.

Harrison Ginsberg, the bar director and head of beverages for Kent’s restaurants, expressed his sorrow and gratitude in a heartfelt message. “Thank you for all the memories, laughs, meals, and lessons,” Ginsberg wrote. “I was always in awe of how much you supported me, my career, and the bar industry.”
