International Nurses day is celebrated every year on May 12 to honour and celebrate the contributions of nurses. Nurses play a vital role in the healthcare sector. Everyone has understood the importance of nurses during the Covid-19 pandemic.

International Nurses Day 2024:- Theme

The theme of International Nurses Day 2024 is “Our Nurses. Our Future.” Despite being the backbone of health care, nursing often faces financial problems and societal undervaluation. This year’s International Nurses Day aims to reshape perceptions, demonstrating how strategic investment in nursing can bring considerable economic and societal benefits.

International Nurses Day 2024:- History

International Council of Nurses celebrated International Nurses day for the first time in 1965. In the year 1953, a US health, welfare and education department official, Dorothy Sunderland, proposed president Dwight D. Eisenhower to proclaim a ‘Nurses Day’ but he did not approve.

In the year 1974, May 12 had been started as Nurses day on the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale who was the founder of modern nursing. She was also a reformer and statistician. She had come forward as a prominent leader during the Crimean war. In this war, she worked as a manager and trainer of nurses.

Due to her pioneering efforts, new nurses started taking Nightingale pledge and the Florence Nightingale medal, the highest International recognition for nurses, was named in her honour.

International Nurses Day 2024:- Significance

Nurses are the integral part of our healthcare system. They are the backbone of hospitals. It has been realised by all of us especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Nurses ensure that the patients are taking medicines and food on time or not.

Although, they were aware that the Covid-19 virus can spread from one person to another by speaking or touching to infected person, despite nurses were not caring about that and were doing their duties with full of enthusiasm.

Nurses are also a link between doctors and patients. They follow the guidelines issued by the doctors for the patients. They make sure whether patients are taking correct and efficient medicines or not which are prescribed by doctors.
