Mukhtar Ansari, a former five-time MLA from Mau Sadar, had been incarcerated in UP and Punjab since 2005, facing over 60 criminal cases.
Mukhtar Ansari, a five-time MLA from Uttar Pradesh’s Mau, passed away due to cardiac arrest on Thursday evening, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of his death.

The notorious politician, held in Banda district jail, was rushed to Rani Durgavati Medical College when his health deteriorated, possibly due to the conclusion of his Ramadan fast. Initially treated in the jail, he was later transferred to the hospital upon suspicion of cardiac arrest.
Arriving at the hospital in an unconscious state at 8:25 pm, Ansari was attended by a panel of nine doctors but succumbed to cardiac arrest.
Subsequently, a magisterial inquiry was initiated following claims from Ansari’s family of foul play, alleging poisoning through his food.
Earlier, Ansari had informed a Barabanki court of being served poisoned food while in prison.

On March 26, he was hospitalized for around 14 hours due to abdominal pain, diagnosed with Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), and admitted to the ICU, with surgery recommended.
Condolences poured in from political quarters, with the Samajwadi Party and other opposition leaders expressing sympathies to Ansari’s family.

He featured on Uttar Pradesh Police’s list of 66 gangsters last year.

Police heightened surveillance in Banda and other areas, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Mau, and Ghazipur, with increased patrolling ordered in sensitive zones.
