Pakistan’s pace bowler Mohammad Amir has rejoined the cricketing fray, finding himself among the 29 cricketers selected for training at a military base ahead of the 2024 ICC Twenty20 World Cup in June. This decision follows his recent return from retirement, prompted by changes in the selection process that convinced him of his value to the team.

Having retired from international cricket in 2020 at the age of 28, citing mental strain under the previous management, Amir expressed his renewed desire to play for Pakistan after positive discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). His announcement to make himself available for the upcoming T20 World Cup signifies a significant turnaround in his career trajectory.

Mohammad Amir‘s cricketing journey has been marked by highs and lows, including a suspension in 2010 due to a spot-fixing scandal, which saw him banned for five years alongside Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif. However, since his return to the sport in 2016, he has contributed significantly to Pakistan’s cricketing endeavors, participating in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, amassing an impressive tally of wickets.

His decision to return coincides with fellow player Imad Wasim’s reversal of his retirement decision, adding depth to Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming tournament. Moreover, the PCB’s restructuring of the selection committee, now comprising seven members with equal authority, aims to streamline the selection process and involve key stakeholders, including the captain and head coach.

With changes also afoot in the coaching setup and the restoration of central contracts for players like Haris Rauf, Pakistan’s cricketing landscape is undergoing a significant transformation ahead of the T20 World Cup.
