Guru Ravidas was born in 1377 C.E. in Manduadih, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. He was born on Magha Purnima (full moon day in the month of Magha). Hence, his birth anniversary is observed on Magha Purnima as per Hindu lunar calendar.
The birth place of Guru Ravidas is known as Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan which is the significant pilgrimage place for the followers of Guru Ravidas. A grand ceremony is organised there on his birth anniversary.
Guru Ravidas’s devotional verses were included in the sacred scripture of Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib. He predominantly opposed the caste system and promoted the communal harmony.
Guru Ravidas Jayanti is mostly celebrated in the Northern states of India such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Chandigarh. His followers take a holy dip in the sacred rivers on this day.
