The Andhra Pradesh train accident has seen an increase in the death toll, with four more casualties reported, according to Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police on Monday. Out of the 13 fatalities, seven individuals have been identified, and efforts to identify the remaining victims are ongoing.
In addition to the fatalities, 54 people sustained injuries in the accident, with 39 of them being admitted to Vizianagaram hospital, and the rest receiving treatment in other hospitals, as stated by Vizianagaram Collector.
The accident occurred after a collision between two trains led to the derailment of train carriages in Vizianagaram district on Sunday.
Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, shared updates on the rescue operation, mentioning that 11 coaches from the front of the 08532 Visakhapatnam-Palasa Passenger train have reached Vizianagaram’s next station, Alamanda, while nine rear coaches of the 08504 Visakhapatnam-Rayagada Passenger train have been moved back to the previous station, Kantakapalle. All unaffected coaches have been cleared from the site.
Rescue operations are in progress, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the situation, communicating with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, with the state government and railway teams working closely together.
This incident follows a similar tragedy that occurred a few months earlier when the Coromandel Express collided with a stationary freight train in Balasore, Odisha’s Bahanaga Bazar station, resulting in 288 deaths and over 1,100 injuries.

Severely wounded Andhra Pradesh passengers will receive Rs 2 lakh, while those from other states will be given Rs 50,000. The Chief Minister will also visit the accident site.

Prime Minister Modi has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of each deceased person and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
The Ministry of Railways has issued helpline numbers, and relief trains and rescue equipment have been dispatched.
Emergency workers and local volunteers have been engaged in rescuing passengers from the wreckage, and the crash has impacted electric lines, as reported by news agency PTI.
