An unsettling incident unfolded in the Russian region of Dagestan as an enraged crowd, primarily consisting of individuals from the Muslim community, forcibly entered Makhachkala Uytash Airport following the arrival of a flight from Israel.

This tumultuous episode led to the temporary closure of the airport and the rerouting of flights. Disturbing videos circulated on social media depicted the crowd both inside the airport and on the runway. Some among the crowd were seen brandishing the Palestinian flag, while others resorted to breaking through closed doors in the international terminal.

The photographs and videos, authenticated by CNN, revealed that the crowd outside the airport displayed signs with troubling antisemitic slogans, including messages such as “We are against Jewish refugees” and “There is no place for child-killers in Dagestan.” This raised significant concerns about the presence of hate-driven sentiments within the protest.

The clashes that ensued resulted in a minimum of ten individuals sustaining injuries, with two individuals in critical condition, as per a statement by the Dagestan Health Ministry.

The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency issued a statement explaining the temporary airport closure, attributing it to “unknown persons” who had unlawfully entered the facility. This incident followed the arrival of a Red Wing Airlines flight from Tel Aviv, which was met with a crowd of protesters upon landing. In one video, a pilot was heard advising passengers against opening the doors due to the presence of protesters below the aircraft.

This incident serves as a stark illustration of the global tensions and divisions stemming from the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The conflict was initiated by a coordinated attack by the militant group on October 7, resulting in significant casualties, with civilians making up the majority, and the kidnapping of over 200 individuals. In response, Israel’s actions have been unrelenting, including placing Gaza under siege and subjecting it to heavy bombardment, which has further escalated tensions beyond the Middle East.

Israeli strikes on Gaza have reportedly caused approximately 8,000 fatalities, with the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah indicating that about 3,000 of those killed were children. These statistics have prompted protests to erupt on a global scale, with people expressing their support for both Israel and Gaza, often leading to heightened tensions.

In response to the Dagestan incident, the Israeli government called upon Russian authorities to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens and Jews. Similarly, the United States unequivocally condemned the antisemitic protests and expressed unwavering solidarity with the worldwide Jewish community.

He cautioned against actions that could exacerbate the situation, ultimately benefiting those with ulterior motives, while stressing the need for unity and empathy among the people of Dagestan.
