Initially affiliated with the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) Sikh separatist group, Nijjar’s association was confirmed by India’s National Investigation Agency. India classifies BKI as a “terrorist organization” allegedly funded by Pakistan’s ISI, which Pakistan denies.

Nijjar later rose to become the leader of the militant group Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF). He was heavily involved in operations, networking, training, and financing of KTF members, according to a 2020 statement by the Indian government.
In the same statement, New Delhi officially labeled him a “terrorist,” accusing him of inciting sedition and discord among different communities in India.
For supporters advocating an independent Sikh state known as Khalistan, Nijjar was a prominent leader and a strong advocate for the cause.

He held the position of head at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurudwara, a Sikh place of worship, in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb, at the time of his death.
Tragically, Hardeep Singh Nijjar was fatally shot outside the same Gurudwara on the evening of June 18.
Following his murder, hundreds of people protested outside the Indian consulate in Vancouver, alleging foreign involvement in his death, as reported by local media.
