Radha Ashtami is one of the most auspicious festivals of hindus. This is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Shri Radha. It is considered that Radha is the incarnation or avatar of Goddess Lakshmi.
As per Hindu calendar, Radha Ashtami is celebrated on eighth day of Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapada month. This year, it falls on Saturday, September 23. Radha Ashtami comes after 15 days of Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna.

Radha Ashtami has great significance among the hindu community. They offer prayers to Shri Radha, the beloved of Lord Krishna. Radha was born 5000 years ago in Barsana, a small village of Mathura. As per legends, she was an adopted daughter of Vrashabhanu and Kirti.
Radha’s love with Lord Krishna is considered soulful, pure and pious. Radha Ashtami also signifies the selfless and admirable bond of love between Radha and Krishna. It is also known as Radha Jayanti.

In the northern part of India, it is celebrated with full of enthusiasm and zeal. On some places, a big event is organised on this day. It is celebrated with extreme grandeur in temples especially in Vrindavan, Mathura and Barsana, the birth place of Shri Radha. Some people observe fast on this day to please Radha. People chant bhajans and do kirtan. They also chant Radha Gayatri Mantra.

People wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath. They clean the idol of Radharani and decorate with flowers and new clothes. Then, they offer vermillion, bhog and shringar to the idol. Devotees perform Aarti and distribute prasad among the family members, friends and relatives.
