Renowned Malayalam filmmaker K.G. George, aged 77, has passed away at an elderly care facility in Kakkanad, located on the outskirts of Kochi, on September 24.
Born in Pathanamthitta in 1946, he pursued a diploma at the Film Institute of India in Pune to kickstart his filmmaking journey.

His directorial debut, ‘Swapnadanam,’ not only achieved commercial success but also garnered critical acclaim. K.G. George consistently departed from conventional song-and-dance sequences, delving into the complexities of everyday life.
Despite his relatively brief stint in the industry, lasting just over two decades, he left behind a remarkable legacy of Malayalam cinema classics. From the investigative thriller ‘Yavanika’ (1982) to the political satire ‘Panchavadi Palam’ (1984) and the psychological thriller ‘Irakal’ (1985), his films continue to inspire contemporary filmmakers.
His film ‘Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback,’ loosely based on the circumstances surrounding the demise of actress Shoba, offered an introspective glimpse into the industry.

Beginning as an assistant to Ramu Kariatt, K.G. George later formed a prominent trio with Bharathan and P. Padmarajan.
As a pioneer of a new cinematic narrative in works like ‘Yavanika’ (1982) and ‘Irakal’ (1986), along with ‘Panchavadippalm’ and ‘Aadaminte Variyellu,’ he cemented his status as one of the all-time great directors in Malayalam cinema.
He is survived by his wife, the playback singer Salma, and their two children.
