The birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha is celebrated as Buddha Purnima. Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born on Purnima tithi of Vaishakh month as per Hindu calendar. This year, Buddha Purnima falls on Friday May 05, 2023. It marks the 2585th birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha.

Buddha Purnima is also known as Buddha Jayanti, Vaisakhi Buddha Purnima and Vesak.

Gautam Buddha was born as Prince Siddharth Gautama in 563 BC in Lumbini which is currently in Nepal. At the age of 30, he left worldly pleasures and started searching the truth. He meditated under Mahabodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, Bihar and attained enlightenment. He preached the lessons of dharma, non-violence, harmony and kindness.

Purnima of Vaisakh month is one of the most important days of Buddhist community as Gautama Buddha was born on this day. They celebrate this day with full of fervour and enthusiasm. In Hinduism, Buddha is considered as the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. So, Hindus also celebrate this day.

Devotees of Buddha visit the Buddha temple on this day, light candles and offer sweets, fruits and kheer to the statue of Gautam Buddha. They wear white clothes and avoid non-vegetarian. In India, there is a major Buddhist pilgrimage place in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh where people visit in a large number. It is believed that Buddha delivered his first sermon there after attaining enlightenment.

Buddha Purnima is celebrated in Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, China, Myanmar, Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea.
