Nirjala Ekadashi 2024: ‘Nirjala’ means without water, people observe fast without drinking even a drop of water. Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimaseni Ekadashi and Pandava Ekadashi.
Nirjala Ekadashi is one of the most auspicious festivals of Hindu community. As per Hindu calendar, it is celebrated on 11th day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. This year, it falls on June 18, 2024. Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimaseni Ekadashi and Pandava Ekadashi.
‘Nirjala’ means without water, people observe fast without drinking even a drop of water. It is considered one of the toughest fasts as abstaining water in the month of June is very difficult in India. There are 24 Ekadashis in a year and Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most auspicious.

According to Drik Panchang, Ekadashi Tithi begins at 04:43 AM on June 17, 2024 and Ekadashi Tithi ends at 06:24 AM on June 18, 2024.

Bhima, the second and strongest of the five Pandava brothers, was the lover of food. He wanted to observe fast on all ekadashis of the year but he couldn’t control his hunger.
Then, he approached the sage Vyas (author of Mahabharta). Vyas advised him to observe only Nirjala Ekadashi fast and he would be able to attain the virtue of all 24 ekadashis.

People wake up early in the morning and observe fast from sunrise to the next day sunrise. Some observe fast from sunrise to sunset. Hindus worship Lord Vishnu to get happiness, prosperity and forgiveness for sins.
Devotees also donate their clothes, food and other things to the needy people on Nirjala Ekadashi.
