The legendary singer and music composer Bappi Lahiri passes away at Criticare Hospital, Mumbai aged 69. He popularised the use of synthesized disco music in Indian cinema that’s why he was known as Disco King.
The legendary singer and music composer Bappi Lahiri passes away at Criticare Hospital, Mumbai on tuesday night. He was 69.
“Lahiri had been admitted to the hospital for a month and was discharged on Monday. But his health deteriorated on Tuesday and his family called for a doctor to visit their home. He was brought to the hospital. He had multiple health issues. He died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight,” Dr Deepak Namjoshi, director of the hospital, told PTI.
Bappi Lahiri’s cremation will be done tomorrow on the arrival of his son Bappa Lahiri from USA. “The cremation will take place on the arrival of Bappa from Los Angeles tomorrow morning. We are seeking love and blessings for his soul,” Bappi Lahiri’s family members said in a statement.
Bappi Lahiri popularised the use of synthesized disco music in Indian cinema that’s why he was known as Disco King. During 80s and 90s, he composed various popular songs for the films such as Disco Dancer, Namak Halaal, Sharaabi, Masterji, Dance Dance and many others. His last bollywood song was Bhankas for the 2020 film Baaghi 3.
He was last seen in one of the weekend episodes of Bigg Boss 15 with Salman Khan.
Fondly known as Bappi Da, was also famous for his sunglasses and gold chains. Prime minister Narendra Modi, President Ramnath Kovind and bollywood celebrities mourned on the death of Bappi Lahiri.
“Shri Bappi Lahiri was a matchless singer-composer. His songs found popularity not only in India but abroad. His diverse range included youthful as well as soulful melodies. His memorable songs will continue to delight listeners for long time. Condolences to his family and fans,” President Ramnath Kovind tweeted.
“Shri Bappi Lahiri Ji’s music was all encompassing, beautifully expressing diverse emotions. People across generations could relate to his works. His lively nature will be missed by everyone. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi tweeted.
“Today we lost another gem from the music industry… Bappi Da,your voice was the reason for millions to dance, including me. Thank you for all the happiness you brought through your music. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Om Shanti,” Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar tweeted. “
“Bappi Da was so endearing in person. But, his music had an edge. He introduced a more contemporary style to Hindi film music with Chalte Chalte, Suraksha & Disco Dancer.

Bappi Da joined the BJP in 2014. He was made a BJP candidate from Srerampur Lok Sabha constituency but he lost the Lok Sabha elections to a Trinamool Candidate that year.
In 1985, Bappi Lahiri won Filmfare award for Best Music Director for ‘Sharaabi’ and he also won Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. He was one of the most influential singers in Bollywood. He is survived by his wife, his son Bappa and his daughter Rema.
