Rafael Nadal beats Daniil Medvedev 2-6 6-7 6-4 6-4 7-5 in the final of Australian Open 2022 to win his record 21st Grand Slam title. He wins his second Australian Open after 13 years, following his first in 2009.
The sixth seed Rafael Nadal beats second seed Daniil Medvedev in the final of Australian Open 2022. Nadal won this final in 5 hours and 24 minutes by beating Medvedev 2-6 6-7 6-4 6-4 7-5 in the five sets at Rod Laver arena on sunday.
Rafael Nadal wins his 21st Grand Slam title and becomes the only player to achieve this target. Before this win, big-three Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal had equal number of 20 Grand Slam titles to their name and now Nadal has surpassed them by winning his record 21st Grand Slam title in Melbourne. There was a debate on this matter that who would win the 21st title first from the big-three. Finally, Nadal has done this in the absence of Djokovic and Federer.
Djokovic couldn’t let play in Australia because of his vaccination issue while Federer didn’t take part in this tournament due to his injury.
The final match between Nadal and Medvedev was very interesting. Russian Medvedev won the first two sets 2-6 6-7 in the tough fight but Nadal did amazing comeback in the third set and won that set 6-4. He didn’t let game finish in the third set and continued this performance in the fourth set as well and won 6-4 that set too. Now the whole game came down to the fifth decider set. After losing first two sets, Nadal won consecutive next three sets. He won last set 7-5 and became the Australian Open 2022 Champion.
Daniil Medvedev was aiming to win his second consecutive Grand Slam title following his first, which came at last year’s US Open. He defeated top seed Novak Djokovic in the US Open final, who was aiming to win his calendar year Grand Slam but Medvedev didn’t let it happen and Djokovic lost his last Grand Slam title after winning Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in a year.
This is Medvedev’s second consecutive defeat in the Australian Open final. Last year, he lost to Djokovic and this time to Nadal.
Rafael Nadal has won his second Australian Open after 13 years. His first Australian Open came in 2009. He reached in the finals of Australian Open in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2019 but faced defeat in all these years. In 2019, Djokovic defeated him in the Australian Open final.
