Omicron variant detected in India, two cases found in Karnataka

The first case of omicron variant was detected in South Africa and till now it has spread in 29 countries (India is the 30th country). The Government of India has imposed a stricter guidelines which have come into effect from December 1.

 Omicron variant has been detected in India. Two positive cases found in Karnataka. Both are men, one is 66 year old while the second is 46 year old. The 66 year old is South african national who has gone back and the 46 year old is a doctor. He has no travel history.

This information has been given by Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Union health ministry on thursday. ” First two cases of omicron variant in India have been detected in Karnataka. Both are males, one is 66 year old and the other is 46 year old”, he said.

“All primary contacts and secondary contacts of both the cases have been traced and are being tested”, he further said.

Meanwhile, health minister Mansukh Mandaviya is holding a meeting with States and Union territories’ officials to review Covid-19 testing and surveillance measures at International airports.

The Government of India has imposed a stricter guidelines which have come into effect from December 1. International travellers are required to submit the 14 days travel history and negative RT-PCR report to aviation ministry.

Government set to restart the commercial international flights from December 15, but this plan has been cancelled due to omicron variant. Resumption date would be announced in due course. 

The RT-PCR negative report is mandatory for all those travellers who are coming from ‘at risk’ countries (where omicron variant has been detected). Centre is also urging states to ramp up the testing.
