James Michael Tyler who was popularly known as Gunther of Friends dies in his home Los Angeles on sunday October 24. He was 59. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018. He didn’t disclose this publicly until June 2021.
In the Friends sitcom, he played the role of coffee shop owner who had unrequited love for Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston. It was the popular show and James appeared in almost 150 episodes of this show.
Jennifer Aniston mourned on the death of James Michael Tyler. She shared his post on instagram and wrote, “Friends would not have been the same without you. Thank you for the laughter you brought to the show and all of our lives. You will be so missed #JamesMichaelTyler”
Matt Leblanc also shared his post on instagram and wrote, “We had a lot of laughs buddy. You will be missed. RIP my friend.”
Courteney Cox paid tribute to James Michael Tyler. “The size of gratitude you brought into the room and showed every day on set is the size of the gratitude I hold for having known you. Rest In peace James”, she wrote in a caption.
“The world knew him as Gunther, from the hit series Friends, but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate and loving husband”, the manager of James Toni Benson wrote in a tribute. “Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures.”
James Michael Tyler was the seventh friend in the sitcom Friends. Apart from Friends, he also appeared in TV series including Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, Just Shoot Me! and Scrubs. James is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno.
