Every year, Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated on Kartik Purnima. This year, it falls on November 15. Purnima tithi begins – 06:19 AM on November 15 and purnima tithi ends – 2:58 PM on November 16.

Guru Nanak Dev is the first Guru of ten Gurus of Sikh community. He was born in the year 1469 in Rai Bhoi ki Talwandi, which is now known as Nankana Sahib. His teachings and life-lessons are in Guru Granth Sahib (the holy book of Sikhs). Guru Nanak said that the God is one (Ek Onkar) which we can read in the beginning of Japji Sahib.

Before a few days of Guru Nanak Jayanti, prabhat pheri or morning processions are held at Gurudwara. All the Gurudwaras are decorated with flowers, lights and diyas. One or two days before Gurupurab, Nagar Kirtan is held at Gurudwara. The Panj pyaras lead the Nagar Kirtan.
The festivities of Guru Nanak Jayanti begin at Amrit vela. Before two days, Akhand Path or a 48 hour non-stop Guru Granth Sahib reading is held in Gurudwaras. People reach Gurudwaras and pay tribute to Guru Nanak Dev on his birth anniversary.

After Akhand Path Sahib, Kirtans are held and devotees sing hymns. People of all caste, creed, religion get together and eat langar (meal). The katha and kirtan recitations continue for the whole day.
