The spouse of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been released from federal custody after serving a three-year sentence for her involvement in managing his multibillion-dollar criminal organization.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, who had previously admitted guilt in 2021 for three federal charges through a plea arrangement with federal prosecutors, was discharged from federal custody on Wednesday.
She had been transferred from a Texas prison to a California halfway house in anticipation of her release. Her post-release period will encompass four years of supervised supervision.
During her sentencing, Coronel Aispuro expressed “genuine remorse for any and all harm,” acknowledging her participation in charges such as money laundering conspiracy and engaging in transactions with a foreign narcotics trafficker.
Additionally, she played a role in aiding her husband’s escape in 2015 when he broke out of a Mexican prison through a tunnel. She had smuggled a GPS watch disguised as food to him, which assisted those digging the tunnel in locating his position.
El Chapo, the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, was recaptured the following year and subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment in the United States in 2019 for orchestrating a massive drug conspiracy that led to violence and chaos spanning over two decades. Throughout his trial in New York, he argued that it was unjust and stated that his case was “tainted.”
