A statement has been shared on the official website of Buffett which reads, “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs. He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”
Born on a Christmas Day in 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, James William Buffett’s journey with music began during his college years, where he pursued a degree in history before ever picking up a guitar. While stationed in Nashville, Tennessee, as a correspondent for “Billboard” magazine, he unexpectedly recorded his debut album in 1970, titled “Down to Earth.” Following this modest start, he released five more albums, each enjoying a degree of success and radio airplay.

However, it was the seventh album, “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” released in 1977, that catapulted Buffett to stardom. This album featured the unforgettable hit single “Margaritaville,” a song told from the perspective of a man reflecting on his life and love choices while “wasting away” at a beach resort during the summer. “Margaritaville” not only became a top-10 “Billboard” hit but also became Buffett’s defining anthem.
In 2023, “Margaritaville” solidified its place in music history by being inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. This recognition was granted due to its profound historical, cultural, or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.
Alongside chart-toppers like “Margaritaville” and “Come Monday,” Jimmy Buffett’s musical repertoire, often described as “drunken Caribbean rock and roll,” featured lighthearted gems such as “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Fins.” It also delved into deeper contemplation with tracks like “He Went to Paris,” “A Pirate Looks at 40,” and “Son of a Sailor.”

Buffett’s 1985 greatest hits compilation, “Songs You Know by Heart: Jimmy Buffett’s Greatest Hit(s),” stands as his most commercially triumphant release, boasting over 5.6 million copies sold. The cheeky addition of the ‘s’ in “Hit(s)” in the title humorously acknowledges that, for some, “Margaritaville” may be the sole song they associate with him.
Across a performing career spanning five decades, Buffett delivered over 30 albums, with 17 achieving RIAA-certified gold or platinum status for sales surpassing 500,000 units. Renowned for his relentless touring alongside his Coral Reefer Band, he fostered an ardent fan base popularly known as Parrotheads.
Jimmy Buffett, a man who fully embraced the lifestyle he sang and wrote about as an enthusiastic sailor and private pilot, didn’t just create music; he crafted a versatile empire that showcased his business acumen.
In 1985, he birthed Margaritaville Holdings, a multifaceted entity encompassing music, lifestyle brands, and much more. This expansive domain included resorts, restaurants, clothing lines, home décor, culinary offerings, tequila, beer, and even a retirement community. As of June 2023, “Forbes” estimated Buffett’s net worth at a staggering $1 billion.

Beyond his musical prowess, Buffett ventured into the realm of literature. He authored the collection of short stories titled “Tales from Margaritaville” in 1989, followed by the 1992 novel “Where Is Joe Merchant?” Both works claimed top spots on the “New York Times” bestseller list, an achievement shared by his 1998 memoir, “A Pirate Looks at 50.”
Remarkably, Buffett joined the exclusive club of authors who dominated both the “New York Times” fiction and nonfiction bestseller lists. Further showcasing his creative range, he co-authored two children’s books with his daughter, Savannah Jane.
Jimmy Buffett‘s artistic reach extended to the stage as well, with his music inspiring the Broadway musical “Escape to Margaritaville,” which premiered in March 2018 and enjoyed 124 regular performances before embarking on a national tour.
In the wake of his passing, Jimmy Buffett is survived by his wife, Jane, two daughters, and a son.
