Karnataka minister Umesh Katti dies due to cardiac arrest on tuesday night at the age of 61. He was the Food, Civil supplies and Consumer Affairs and Forest minister.

As per reports, he suddenly collapsed in the bathroom at his Dollar’s colony residence and was rushed to a private hospital in Bengaluru where he was declared dead. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

A record eight time legislator from north Karnataka’s Belagavi district, Katti held several ministerial posts in the state.

His colleagues, state cabinet ministers and BJP leaders rushed to the hospital after hearing this news.

Karnataka Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai paid tribute to his colleague and close friend Umesh Katti. He said that the state has lost a skilled diplomat, active leader and loyal public servant.

“Deeply saddened by the untimely demise of my close colleague Shri Umesh Katti, Minister of Forests. With his demise, the state has lost a skilled diplomat, active leader and loyal public servant. I pray that the Lord gives strength to his family to bear his loss,” Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai tweeted.

Karnataka government has announced that his last rites will be performed with full state honours. One-day state mourning on wednesday has also been announced. Flag will fly at half-mast to show respect to the late minister.

PM Narendra Modi expressed condolences

Prime minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to him. He wrote, “Shri Umesh Katti Ji was an experienced leader who made rich contributions to Karnataka’s development. Pained by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this tragic hour. Om Shanti.”

Umesh Katti joined politics after the demise of his father Vishwanath Katti in 1985. After that, he never looked back and earned a big name in politics. Before joining the BJP in 2008, he was with the Janata Party, Janata Dal JD(U) and JD(S).
