Movie Summary
Down by Love is a French romantic drama, originally titled Éperdument (“Madly”), which is loosely based on a true, scandalous event in France in 2011.
The film centers on the impossible and illicit love affair between Jean Firmino, the confident, married, and middle-aged director of a women’s correctional facility, and Anna Amari, a young, rebellious inmate who is serving a long sentence for an unspecified serious crime.
The story follows Jean’s escalating obsession after he first meets Anna. He uses his position to give her a job in the commissary and arranges increasingly risky private meetings within the prison walls. Despite the obvious professional and personal risk—he has a wife and young daughter—Jean sacrifices everything for the passionate relationship.
The film charts the intensity of their forbidden amour fou (“mad love”) and the inevitable consequences that their reckless, all-consuming affair brings to both of their lives, leading to a breakdown of order and Jean’s eventual downfall.
