Carlos Alcaraz came prepared this year. In last year’s Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic, he had a slow start, losing the first set before clinching the title in a five-set battle. This year’s rematch, however, was a different story from the beginning. The opening game alone spanned 20 points over nearly 15 minutes, setting the stage for an intense and prolonged contest. Alcaraz outshined Djokovic, demonstrating superior play throughout most of the match.

Learning from his experiences in 2023, Alcaraz dominated the 2024 final, winning 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) against Djokovic to claim his second consecutive Wimbledon championship and fourth Grand Slam title overall—all by the age of 21.

“At the end of my career, I want to sit at the same table as the big guys,” Alcaraz said after his victory. Having recently won the French Open, he now joins the elite group of men who have won both Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same season. He expressed his ambitions after receiving the Wimbledon trophy from Kate, the Princess of Wales, stating, “That’s my main goal. That’s my dream right now.”

Alcaraz remains undefeated in major finals, boasting a 4-0 record, including his 2022 U.S. Open win. Only Roger Federer had a better start, going 7-0 in his career. Djokovic, at 37, acknowledged Alcaraz’s superior performance, saying, “He just was better than me in every aspect of the game. In movement, in the way he was just striking the ball beautifully, serving great. Everything.”

There was a brief moment of uncertainty for Alcaraz when he was on the verge of victory but faltered, allowing Djokovic to even the score at 5-all in the third set. However, Alcaraz quickly regained his composure and secured the win in the tiebreaker.

Reflecting on last year’s match, Djokovic remarked, “We went toe to toe. This year, it was nothing like that. It was all about him. He was the dominant force on the court and deserved to win.”

Djokovic, who had knee surgery less than six weeks ago, struggled against Alcaraz, showing signs of discomfort and uncharacteristic mistakes. Despite the spectators’ support, Djokovic couldn’t overcome Alcaraz’s relentless play.

The opening game was the most competitive until the third set. Although there were moments of excitement, the outcome seemed inevitable. Djokovic double-faulted to give Alcaraz a 5-1 lead in the first set and made similar errors in the second. By the third set, Djokovic managed his only break of the match, but it wasn’t enough.

Alcaraz’s remarkable skills were on full display, from his powerful serves reaching up to 136 mph to his stunning forehand winners and clever drop shots. He accumulated 14 break points and converted five, while only facing three himself.

Two days before the final, Djokovic praised Alcaraz, noting similarities between them. Alcaraz’s performance on Sunday proved those comparisons accurate and hinted at an even brighter future for the young champion.

“I want to keep going,” Alcaraz stated, setting his sights on further achievements.
