President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, conferred the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, to Captain Singh posthumously. Smriti Singh received the honor on his behalf on Friday.
Reflecting on their first encounter, Smriti Singh said, “It was love at first sight.”
“We met on the first day of college. It was indeed love at first sight. After a month, he was selected for the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC). We met at an engineering college, and then he moved to a medical college. He was incredibly intelligent. Our relationship turned long-distance for eight years, and eventually, we decided to marry,” Smriti Singh recounted their love story.
She struggled to contain her emotions as she spoke. The couple married in February 2023 after Anshuman Singh completed his studies at AFMC.
Smriti then recalled their last conversation before the tragic day.

“On July 18, we talked at length about our future—planning our home, having children, and more. On the morning of July 19, I received a call informing me that he was no more,” she said, her voice breaking.
Describing the shock her family experienced, Smriti said, “For the first 7-8 hours, we couldn’t accept it. Even now, I struggle to cope. Holding the Kirti Chakra helps me realize it’s real. He is a hero. We are managing our lives because he gave his up to save others.”
Captain Singh showed remarkable bravery during a significant fire incident in Siachen. In July 2023, a short circuit caused a fire in an Indian Army ammunition dump. Amid the chaos, Captain Singh rescued fellow soldiers trapped in a fiber-glass hut.
As the fire spread to a medical shelter, Captain Singh attempted to retrieve life-saving medicines but sustained severe burns and later succumbed to his injuries.
