Breaking the news on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mendler disclosed that Northwood Space had recently secured a substantial $6.3 million in funding. The organization’s objective is ambitious, aiming to redefine space data accessibility by designing state-of-the-art ground infrastructure. As expressed by Mendler herself, the goal is to transform the existing “one-lane rickety road for space data” into a “ten-lane highway routing continuous traffic across the globe.”
Despite her successful career as an actress and singer during her teenage and young adult years, Mendler pursued higher education diligently. Graduating from the University of Southern California in 2016, she went on to earn both a master’s and doctorate of philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2020 and 2024, respectively. Additionally, Mendler achieved a doctorate of law from Harvard Law School in 2024.
During her academic journey, Mendler immersed herself in the intricacies of space law while spending time at the Federal Communications Commission’s new Space Bureau. In an interview with CNBC, she revealed her deep passion for the evolving field, stating, “Space is getting easier along so many different dimensions, but still the actual exercise of sending data to and from space is difficult. You have difficulty finding an access point for contacting your satellite.”
Her co-founders, Cleverly and Luthra, bring valuable expertise to Northwood Space, having previously worked at Lockheed Martin, the Mitre Corporation, and Capella Space.
