Plot Summary
The story centers on David (Biel Durán), an awkward and emotionally sensitive 16-year-old growing up on the poorer side of Madrid. He is struggling through a challenging phase of adolescence, facing the typical frustrations of school and his first serious romantic obsession.

David is hopelessly in love with Gloria (Bárbara Lennie), the prettiest and seemingly unattainable girl in his class. Lacking any experience or grace in attracting girls, David attempts a series of desperate and often idiotic antics to get Gloria’s attention. Unfortunately for him, these efforts only succeed in making him look foolish and pushing her further away.
Compounding his teenage angst, David also has to deal with the increasingly difficult situation at home. His grandmother, Teresa, whose health is failing both physically and emotionally, has moved in with his family, further disrupting his already fragile sense of privacy and normalcy.
The film paints a far-from idyllic portrait of adolescence, showing David’s journey as he is repeatedly confronted with the harsh realities of growing up: the difficulty of first love, the lack of support from his parents (who run a small bakery), the cruelty of classmates, and the realization that he is, in his own mind, more of a “loser” than a winner. The title itself is a pun, referring both to the main character’s crush (Gloria) and his overwhelming sense of grief (pena).
