Virat Kohli wants to retire from test cricket.

Virat Kohli has reportedly informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his intention to retire from Test cricket ahead of India’s upcoming five-match series against England, scheduled to begin on June 20, 2025. While the BCCI has requested him to reconsider, Kohli appears resolute in his decision.

This development follows closely on the heels of Rohit Sharma’s recent retirement from Test cricket, signaling a significant transition period for the Indian Test team.

Kohli, 36, has been a cornerstone of India’s Test side, amassing over 9,000 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85. His leadership tenure from 2014 to 2022 was marked by 40 victories in 68 Tests, including a historic series win in Australia.

Despite a dip in form—averaging 30.72 since 2020 compared to 54.97 earlier—Kohli remains a pivotal figure in Indian cricket. His potential retirement would leave a leadership void, with players like Shubman Gill and KL Rahul expected to assume greater responsibilities.

The BCCI is expected to finalize the squad for the England series soon, and Kohli‘s decision will significantly influence team composition and strategy.
