P Jayachandran, ‘Bhava Gayakan’ of Indian Playback Singing, Dies at 80

Renowned playback singer P Jayachandran, fondly referred to as ‘Bhava Gayakan’ (Singer of Emotions), passed away on January 9, 2025, at the age of 80.

The singer, who resided in Punkunnam, Thrissur, collapsed at home and was rushed to a nearby private hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at around 7:55 PM.

About P Jayachandran

Born on March 3, 1944, in Ernakulam, Kerala, Jayachandran displayed his musical talent early on, excelling in light classical music and playing the mridangam during his school years.

Over six decades, he recorded over 16,000 songs in languages such as Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. He collaborated with iconic composers like G. Devarajan, M. S. Baburaj, Ilaiyaraaja, and A. R. Rahman.

P Jayachandran received numerous accolades for his contributions to music, including the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer, five Kerala State Film Awards, and four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. In 2020, he was honored with the J. C. Daniel Award, the highest recognition in Malayalam cinema, for his exceptional contributions to the industry.

He is survived by his wife, Lalitha, his daughter, Lakshmi, and his son, Dinanath. His funeral will take place on January 11, 2025, at his ancestral home in Chendamangalam. Public homage will be held at his residence in Punkunnam and later at the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi.
