The crash resulted in two fatalities—the pilot and his 16-year-old daughter—and injured 19 individuals inside the building, with injuries ranging from minor to severe.
The incident occurred around 2:00 PM PST in the 2300 block of Raymer Avenue, approximately half a mile from the airport. Security footage showed the plane tilting on its side before crashing through the roof, igniting a four-alarm fire that produced large plumes of smoke. Emergency responders evacuated more than 100 occupants from the warehouse and surrounding businesses.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the aircraft took off at 2:07 PM and climbed to about 900 feet before the pilot requested an immediate return to the airport. The control tower cleared the pilot to land on any runway; however, the plane made a 180-degree left turn and crashed approximately 1,000 feet short of the runway.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the NTSB are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports are expected within two weeks, with a final report anticipated in 12 to 18 months.
