On December 30, 2024, Yemen’s President Rashad al-Alimi approved Priya’s death sentence, with the execution expected to occur within a month. This development has deeply distressed her family in Kerala, who have been actively seeking her release.
The Indian government has stated that it is providing all possible assistance in the matter. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, acknowledged the sentencing and mentioned that Priya’s family is exploring relevant options.
Efforts to secure Priya‘s release have included attempts to negotiate ‘blood money’ with the victim’s family, a provision under Islamic law that allows for a pardon in exchange for compensation. Despite raising approximately $40,000, these efforts have not yet led to a resolution.
As the execution date approaches, Priya’s family and supporters continue to appeal for clemency and are seeking further diplomatic intervention to save her life.
