In the interview, Stephanopoulos suggested that Trump had been found liable for rape in a civil case involving writer E. Jean Carroll. While a federal jury had found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, it did not determine that he was liable for rape under New York’s narrow legal definition.
Trump’s lawsuit accused ABC News of damaging his reputation by misrepresenting the outcome of the Carroll case. The settlement includes an additional $1 million to cover Trump’s legal fees and a requirement for ABC to publish a statement acknowledging regret over the inaccurate remarks. The statement will also appear as an editor’s note on the relevant online article.
This settlement is a notable win for Trump, as similar defamation suits against other media outlets, including CNN and The New York Times, have not been successful. It reflects his ongoing legal strategy to confront media organizations that he claims have defamed him during his political career.
