Swiss Olympic snowboarder Sophie Hediger tragically passed away at the age of 26 after being caught in an avalanche at the Arosa resort in Switzerland.

The incident occurred on December 23, 2024, when Hediger and an acquaintance were on a closed Black Diamond slope due to avalanche risks.

Emergency services were alerted, but despite their efforts, Hediger could not be revived.

Hediger, born on December 14, 1998, in Horgen, Zurich, Switzerland, was a prominent figure in the snowboarding community. She represented Switzerland in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, competing in women’s snowboard cross and the mixed team snowboard cross.

In the 2023-24 season, she achieved her first two World Cup podium finishes, with her best result being a second-place finish in St. Moritz in January.

Walter Reusser, CEO of Swiss-Ski, expressed deep condolences to Sophie Hediger‘s family, describing her death as a tragic and premature loss.

The snowboarding community mourns the loss of a talented athlete whose promising career was cut short.
