Karwa Chauth is celebrated every year by the married women and by some unmarried women as well. They take fast (vrat) on this day for the good health, prosperity and long life of their husbands. Hindus celebrate this day with full of enthusiasm and fervour especially in northern states of India.

Different states of India celebrate this day with different ways. In some states, nearby women get together and sit in a circle for doing Karwa Chauth puja collectively and pass their thalis around in the circle. Puja is an essential part of this day.

Karwa Chauth is celebrated after the fourth day of Purnima in the Hindu month of Kartika. According to the Gregorian calendar, it generally falls in the month of October or November. This year, Karwa Chauth falls on October 20, 2024 (Sunday).

Karwa Chauth Chaturthi tithi will begin at 06:46 AM on October 20, 2024 (Sunday) and will end at 04:16 AM on October 21, 2024 (Monday).

Women can observe fast from 06:25 AM till moon sighting at 07:54 PM on October 20, 2024.

Karwa Chauth 2024:- Significance and Celebrations

On Karwa Chauth, hindu women wake up early in the morning and observe ‘Sargi’ made by their Mother-in-law which includes fruits, milk and dry-fruits. Married women have it before the rising of Sun and before the starting of their fast. After that, they don’t drink even a drop of water until the moon rises.

The celebrations of Karwa Chauth start many days before. Married women start purchasing new dresses, bangles, jewellery and other things for karwa chauth. ‘Karwa’ is the second word for ‘pot’ and ‘Chauth’ means ‘fourth.’ Women decorate a pot with many colours and fill it with bangles, fruits and a small piece of cloth.

People meet relatives and friends on this day and exchange gifts with them. Women who do fast on this day, go to the temples and do puja there. At the evening when moon rises, women break their fast by drinking a sip of water from the husband’s hand. Afterwards, they can have a complete meal.
