Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari, once recognized as the heaviest man on earth with a staggering weight of over 610 kilograms, has experienced a remarkable transformation over the past decade. Today, Shaari weighs just 68 kilograms, shedding an extraordinary 542 kilograms—an astonishing 89% of his former body weight.

According to reports from West Asian news outlets, the 33-year-old Shaari, who had to be airlifted from his hometown of Jazan to Riyadh, has maintained a weight of approximately 63.5 kilograms since last year.

The turning point in Shaari’s life came in 2013 when Saudi Arabia’s then-King Abdullah, deeply moved by Shaari’s dire health condition, took it upon himself to ensure the young man’s treatment. At the time, Shaari, still a teenager, had been bedridden for nearly three years due to his extreme obesity.

King Abdullah orchestrated a complex operation to transport Shaari from his home, using a forklift and a specially designed bed. The teenager, who had become entirely dependent on his family and friends for basic needs, was in critical condition, with his life hanging in the balance due to his immobility.

A dedicated team of 30 medical professionals was assembled to oversee Shaari’s recovery. Upon arrival in Riyadh, he was admitted to King Fahd Medical City, where he underwent a life-saving gastric bypass surgery.

Along with surgery, Shaari was placed on a carefully designed diet and exercise program, and within six months, he had lost nearly half his body weight. Intensive care and physiotherapy further propelled his recovery.

To aid in his mobility, a custom-made wheelchair was provided, enabling him to participate in physical therapy. Despite the progress, Shaari still requires mechanical assistance to sit up.

Throughout his journey, his unwavering positivity earned him the affectionate nickname “the smiling man” from the medical staff who cared for him.
