In response to the CAS ruling, Jordan Chiles took to Instagram, posting four broken heart emojis and announcing a temporary retreat from social media for her mental health.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that the bronze medal originally awarded to American gymnast Jordan Chiles in the floor exercise at the Paris Games will be reassigned to Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu.

This decision follows a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Saturday, which determined that the United States’ inquiry regarding Chiles’ score during the gymnastics floor exercise final on Monday was filed after the one-minute deadline had passed.
As a result, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) decided to reinstate Chiles’ initial score of 13.666, allowing Bărbosu, who scored 13.700, to claim third place. Consequently, the IOC confirmed that Chiles would be stripped of her bronze medal, which will now be awarded to Bărbosu.
“Following the CAS decision regarding the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Floor Exercise Final and the adjustment of the rankings by the International Gymnastics Federation, the IOC will reallocate the bronze medal to Ana Bărbosu of Romania,” the IOC said in a statement.
“We are in contact with the Romanian National Olympic Committee to arrange the reallocation ceremony, and with the USOPC regarding the return of the bronze medal.”

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) responded on Sunday, announcing plans to appeal the decision. “We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the FIG and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed,” the committee stated.
“We are committed to pursuing an appeal to help Jordan Chiles receive the recognition she deserves.”
USA Gymnastics echoed this sentiment, expressing their disappointment with the ruling in a previous statement on Saturday.
The controversy began during Monday’s competition, where Bărbosu initially believed she had secured the bronze with a score of 13.700. Chiles’ original score of 13.666 was later adjusted to 13.766 following a successful challenge by her coaches, moving her up to third place behind gold medalist Rebeca Andrade and fellow American Simone Biles.
The moment marked a historic all-Black Olympic gymnastics podium, creating one of the most memorable images of the Games.

However, CAS’s ruling, which cited the late submission of the inquiry on behalf of Chiles, cast doubt on her medal. In response to the ruling, Chiles took to Instagram, posting four broken heart emojis and announcing a temporary retreat from social media for her mental health.
