A nationwide strike, termed “Bharat Bandh,” is scheduled for August 21, 2024, as a direct response to a recent Supreme Court ruling concerning SC/ST reservations. The protest, organized by the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, is receiving strong backing from SC/ST groups, particularly those in Rajasthan.

In anticipation of the Bandh, law enforcement agencies are stepping up preparations. Rajasthan’s Director General of Police, UR Sahoo, has instructed district Superintendents of Police to ensure public order and engage with local organizations.

“We have directed our officials to hold meetings with the groups advocating for the bandh, as well as with market associations, to promote better cooperation,” Sahoo was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

The Supreme Court’s ruling, which excludes the “creamy layer” from SC/ST reservations, has stirred controversy and prompted this call for protest. Police forces across Rajasthan have been advised to increase their presence and collaborate closely with local SC/ST groups to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful, according to reports.

In Jaipur, Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph has already begun discussions with groups endorsing the strike. Authorities are taking proactive steps to prevent any potential conflicts or disruptions during the protest.

This Bharat Bandh follows a series of recent protests in India, including nationwide hospital strikes against violence targeting healthcare workers and a local trade union protest in Bathinda, reflecting growing socio-political unrest across the country, according to the TOI report.

The Bharat Bandh is expected to garner support from various social and political organizations, all rallying against the Supreme Court’s verdict on reservations.

While public transportation and private offices are typically affected during such strikes, emergency services, including ambulances, are expected to remain operational.

Western Uttar Pradesh has been identified as a particularly sensitive region, prompting authorities to place law enforcement on high alert. Extensive measures are being put in place to protect the public during the protests.
