Sumit Nagal marked a milestone as the first Indian male singles player to participate in Wimbledon’s main draw in five years.
Sumit Nagal, an Indian tennis player, was eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon 2024 by Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic.
In his debut main draw match at Wimbledon, Nagal pushed the contest to four sets before succumbing 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6. Ranked 72nd globally, Nagal’s battle against the 53rd-ranked Kecmanovic spanned two hours and 38 minutes.

Nagal marked a milestone as the first Indian male singles player to participate in Wimbledon’s main draw in five years. The last was Prajnesh Gunneswaran in 2019, who also exited in the first round.
During Monday’s match, Nagal made 44 unforced errors and secured 104 points compared to Kecmanovic’s 122. Kecmanovic notched six aces, three more than Nagal, and converted seven break points.
This victory was Kecmanovic’s second against the 26-year-old Nagal, having previously defeated him at an ATP 250 event in Cologne four years ago.
Earlier in 2024, Nagal qualified for the main draws of the Australian Open, French Open, Indian Wells Masters, and Monte Carlo Masters. He also claimed titles at the Heilbronn Challenger and the Chennai Open ATP Challenger events.
Notably, Nagal became the first Indian male tennis player to defeat a seeded player in a Grand Slam by overcoming 31st-seeded Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in straight sets at the Australian Open.
Next, Sumit Nagal will compete in the men’s doubles at Wimbledon, teaming up with Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic to face Spain’s Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar in the first round.

Additionally, three other Indian players will participate in the men’s doubles at Wimbledon 2024.
Rohan Bopanna, partnering with Australia’s Matthew Ebden, is the second-seeded team and will face France’s Adrian Mannarino and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in their opening match.
N Sriram Balaji will team up with Great Britain’s Luke Johnson to challenge French Open champions Mate Pavic and Marcelo Arevalo in the first round. Yuki Bhambri and Frenchman Albano Olivetti will go up against Alexander Bublik and Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan.
