The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a “Stay Home” advisory, urging residents to stay safe and venture out only if necessary.
Mumbai and its suburbs were hit by heavy rain early Monday morning, resulting in severe waterlogging on major roads and low-lying areas. This caused significant traffic jams, disrupted daily life, and led to the cancellation of some train services. The Mumbai airport also diverted 27 flights to other destinations. Civic officials reported that various parts of the city received over 300 mm of rain between 1 am and 7 am.

Neighborhoods such as Andheri, Kurla, Bhandup, King’s Circle, Vile Parle, and Dadar experienced substantial water accumulation. The continuous rainfall overwhelmed the storm drains, bringing traffic to a halt in many parts of India’s financial hub. Vehicles were seen drifting, and people waded through knee-deep water in several areas.
“More than 300 millimeters of rain has been recorded at different places in the six-hour period from midnight yesterday to 7 am today. Heavy rains have caused waterlogging in some low-lying areas, and suburban rail services have also been disrupted,” stated the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
In response, the BMC announced a half-day holiday for government and private schools and colleges under its jurisdiction, with a decision on afternoon classes to be made later.
The Mumbai airport faced low visibility due to the heavy rain, leading to the suspension of runway operations and the diversion of 27 flights between 2.22 am and 3.40 am. Flights were redirected to cities such as Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Indore. The airport has advised passengers to check their flight status with airlines and to plan their journey accordingly.

The Central Railway cancelled several trains, including the MMR-CSMT (12110), Pune-CSMT (11010), Pune-CSMT Deccan (12124), Pune-CSMT Deccan (11007), and CSMT-Pune Intercity Express (12127). Local train services were briefly halted but resumed after water receded from the tracks.
“Due to heavy rains, especially on the main line, there is waterlogging around Kurla Bhandup and here on the Harbour Line, from Wadala to Mankhurd, it is closed because there is a lot of water logging around Chunabhatti. These services are disrupted… We have cancelled some trains and diverted some trains… I appeal to people not to leave their homes unless it is necessary,” said Ram Karan Yadav, General Manager, Central Railway.
Highways and major roads not submerged were congested with heavy traffic during rush hours. Visuals from the Western Expressway showed long stretches of vehicles struggling to navigate.
The BMC issued a “Stay Home” advisory, urging residents to stay safe and venture out only if necessary. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted that Mumbai will continue to experience moderate to heavy rain in the city and its suburbs.
“The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai today. In the wake of continuous rains, the entire machinery of the BMC is working on the field. Mumbaikar are requested not to believe in any rumors. Also, to step out of the house only if it is necessary. In case of an emergency, call 1916 for immediate assistance,” stated the civic body.

Additionally, weather authorities have predicted a high tide of 4.2 meters at around 2 pm today due to the prevailing weather conditions.
