Hanuman was born to Mata Anjana and Kesari. It is believed that Anjana and Kesari worshipped Lord Shiva and did penance before Hanuman’s birth. Lord Shiva pleased and blessed them by giving birth to Hanuman. That’s why Hanuman is considered the incarnation of Lord Shiva.
Hanuman is also described as the son of Vayu Deva i.e. the wind God. On Hanuman Jayanti, people wake up early in the morning and after bathing wear clean clothes. Devotees visit Hanuman temple and offer boondi and laddoo to him. They also offer sindoor (vermillion), garlands and flowers.
Lord Hanuman is the symbol of strength and energy. This can be gauged from this when he brought Dronagiri hill for Sanjeevani herb. Wrestlers and bodybuilders also pray to Lord Hanuman. In villages, wrestling competitions are held on this day.
Devotees observe a day long fast on this day. They chant Hanuman Chalisa 108 times as it is believed to get rid of sorrows and negative powers.
