World Cancer Day 2024:- History
World Cancer day was established on February 4, 2000 at the World Cancer Summit against Cancer for the New Millenium held at Paris, France. The then General director of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura and the then French President Jacques Chirac signed the Charter of Paris against Cancer at the summit.
World Cancer Day 2024:- Theme
The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) decides theme every year on the World Cancer day. The theme for World Cancer Day 2022-2024 is “Close the Care gap.” This theme is about identifying and addressing the barriers that exist for many people around the world in accessing the care they need.

As per World Cancer day organisation, 10 million people die from cancer every year which is more than even HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Cancer is the second leading cause of death.
Near about 70% cases of Cancer occur in low to middle income countries. More than one-third cancers are preventable. So, by implementing appropriate strategies for prevention, early detection and treatment, millions of lives can be saved.
On this day, UICC organise event or programme on social media and spreads awareness about cancer. There are a lot of misinformation and many misconceptions about cancer which can be cleared by giving proper education to people.
Now-a-days, treatment of cancer becomes much easier as compared to early period because now more information is available about it. Technology has advanced and there are many general treatments available for different cancers such as Surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Immunotherapy, Hormone therapy, Gene therapy, Survivorship and Palliative care.
Cancer patients need more support, empathy and care that society can give them in unison.
