In a somber turn of events, Namibia’s President Hage Geingob has passed away while undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.

The announcement was made by Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba, who revealed that the 82-year-old leader breathed his last in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Surrounded by his beloved wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and his children, President Geingob had battled cancer, a diagnosis he publicly shared just last month. Despite plans to seek treatment in the US and a scheduled return to Namibia on February 2nd, fate had a different plan.

Taking office in 2015, President Geingob was in his second and final term. His resilience was evident through previous health challenges, including a prostate cancer survival in 2014 and an aortic operation in the preceding year.

As Namibia prepares for presidential and parliamentary elections in November, the governing Swapo party, in power since independence in 1990, has selected Mrs. Nandi-Ndaitwah as its presidential candidate.

Currently serving as Namibia’s deputy prime minister, her potential victory would mark a historic moment, making her the country’s first female president. Namibia now reflects on the legacy left by President Geingob and anticipates a new chapter in its political landscape.
