In the prison photo, Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced founder of FTX, appears noticeably disheveled, as noted by crypto influencer Tiffany Fong. Fong obtained the image from G Lock, a former inmate who claimed the photo was taken on December 17, 2023, during the limited occasions inmates are allowed to take pictures.

The accompanying video post by Fong revealed G Lock standing beside Bankman-Fried, emphasizing the founder’s weight loss and a decline in personal grooming, indicative of the challenging conditions he is facing.

Bankman-Fried has been incarcerated at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center since August. Initially placed under house arrest, he was later remanded after a judge found probable cause that he attempted to tamper with witnesses. The detention center has gained notoriety for its subpar living conditions, with a former warden describing it as “the most troubled facility in the Bureau of Prisons.”

Beyond grappling with the prison’s hygiene standards, Bankman-Fried also confronts the stark reality of limited entertainment options, as inmates are restricted to radios or MP3 players without internet access.

In November, a Manhattan federal court jury found him guilty on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy, marking a stark fall from grace for the individual once hailed as crypto’s golden boy.

Facing the possibility of up to 110 years in prison, Bankman-Fried’s sentencing is scheduled for March 28. Despite the revelations from the prison photo, a representative for Bankman-Fried declined to comment on the matter when contacted by Business Insider.
